This painting is from a body of works that explores Pan-Asian supermarkets, in particular my childhood memories of them as a mixed Asian diaspora growing up in Australia. I’m interested in how impactful sensory experiences in spaces can be, and how I navigate that as someone with sensory issues. Visual information, lights, stimuli, sounds – ways that my nostalgic attachment to a space are influenced by sensory elements and the feelings evoked from the space, rather than the physical space itself.
