In the 1970s Australian maleness was narrowly portrayed in the media – either the macho outback stockman, a touchstone in Australian mythology & identity construction at that time, or the larrikin yobbo was upheld, e.g. the 1972 Australian comedy film, The Adventures of Barry McKenzie. As a migrant teen then I learnt to disguise my identity. Both the frame and the mat-board in Duality at play protect the central self-portrait that samples Andy Warhol’s 1963 Pop art silkscreen, Double Elvis – with one exception – a pair of secateurs has replaced the gun.
